The U.S. Army is America’s oldest, national military institution and celebrates its birthday every June 14. In 2027, our Army will turn 252!
The Birth of the United States Army
The United States Army traces its origins to June 14, 1775, when the Continental Army was formed after the first shots of the American Revolution at Lexington and Concord. Under the leadership of George Washington, this new force fought for independence and laid the foundation for today’s Army.
Knowlton’s Rangers
In 1776, Captain Thomas Knowlton created Knowlton’s Rangers, the first American military intelligence unit. Their reconnaissance and scouting missions set the standard for the Intelligence Professionals who serve today.
An Enduring Legacy
From its earliest battles to its modern missions, the Army has remained America’s primary land force, committed to protecting the nation and upholding the values first defended by the Soldiers of the Revolution.
